Geography & Location

Ajax occupies a prime location in the western part of Durham Region, covering 67 square kilometers along the Lake Ontario shoreline. The town features nearly 7 kilometers of waterfront, including beaches, bluffs, and wetlands. The landscape is characterized by two major creek systems - Duffins Creek and Carruthers Creek - which create natural corridors through the community. The town's relatively flat topography has facilitated excellent cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, with over 95 kilometers of multi-use trails. The urban area is clearly defined by Highway 401 to the north, while the waterfront provides recreational opportunities and natural habitat. The Ajax-Pickering hospital serves as a landmark on the western border, while the GO Station area has developed into a transit-oriented hub. The town's geography has supported the development of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character, from the historic Pickering Village in the north to the waterfront communities in the south.

Recent History

Ajax has experienced remarkable growth and transformation since the late 1990s. Originally developed as a wartime community, the town has evolved into a modern suburban center. The early 2000s saw significant commercial development along Highway 401, including the Durham Centre and RioCan Durham Centre. The downtown area underwent revitalization starting in 2010, with the development of Pat Bayly Square as a new civic center. The GO Station area has seen intense development since 2015, with multiple high-rise residential projects transforming the skyline. Environmental initiatives have been a priority, with the town implementing an aggressive storm water management program and establishing the Ajax Waterfront as a premier recreational destination. The town is known for its diversity, with visible minorities comprising over 55% of the population, one of the highest proportions in Durham Region. The South Asian, Black, and Filipino communities are particularly well-represented. The median age is 37, making Ajax one of the youngest communities in the GTA. Approximately 42% of households include children under 18, reflecting the town's appeal to young families. Education levels are high, with 68% of adults holding post-secondary credentials. The median household income is $108,000, with many residents working in professional and management positions in Toronto or the Durham Region. The town has attracted many first-generation Canadians, contributing to its multicultural character and vibrant community life. The population includes a significant number of healthcare professionals, given the proximity to Ajax-Pickering Hospital.
