Geography & Location

Brooklin is situated in the northern part of Whitby, encompassing approximately 30 square kilometers of carefully planned community space. The area is characterized by gently rolling terrain, with elevations ranging from 150 to 200 meters above sea level. Lynde Creek and its tributaries wind through the community, creating natural corridors and parkland. The historic village core is surrounded by expanding residential developments to the north and east. The community is bounded by natural heritage systems including the Heber Down Conservation Area to the west and agricultural lands to the north. The urban forest includes both mature trees in the historic village and new plantings in developing areas, with the municipality actively working to achieve 30% canopy coverage. Major transportation arteries include Highway 7/12, Baldwin Street, and the recently completed Highway 407 extension. Recent History

Originally settled in the 1840s as a small agricultural community, Brooklin's transformation over the past two decades has been remarkable while preserving its historic character. The historic downtown core, centered around Baldwin Street, maintains its 19th-century architecture and was designated a Heritage Conservation District in 2008. Since 2005, the population has grown from 7,000 to over 25,000 residents, driven by major residential developments and the completion of Highway 407. The Winchester Development, initiated in 2010, added significant residential capacity while incorporating heritage design elements.
